working together to make better places to grow old

Healthy Ageing

Medical advances and improved living conditions mean that people today are living longer than ever before. However, maintaining good health and wellbeing during these additional years remains a major challenge.

Age-related changes, together with environmental and socioeconomic inequalities, increase the risk of developing non-communicable diseases and experiencing poorer health outcomes in later life.

The United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing calls for a shift in how societies view ageing and for the creation of communities that support the abilities, participation, and wellbeing of older people.

Evidence also shows that social connection plays a critical role in healthy ageing. Research from the World Health Organization highlights that loneliness and social isolation can significantly impact both physical and mental health, increasing risks of depression, cognitive decline, and other health conditions. Creating opportunities for meaningful social interaction is therefore essential for supporting healthy and active ageing.

Our Vision for Healthy Ageing

At Community Wisdom CIC, we recognise the societal tendency to marginalise people over 60, as well as the significant health inequalities that affect them. We are committed to challenging this narrative.

We celebrate the experience and wisdom of all community members and aim to help people feel empowered, improve their quality of life, and strengthen their contribution to society.

For us, healthy ageing is a call to action—to help create communities where everyone, at every age, feels valued, purposeful, and connected

UN Decade of Healthy Ageing

Longer Lives are one of humanity's greatest achievments. However, we don't just want to add years to our life. We also want to enjoy good health and well-being in later life. This is healthy ageing.
This Decade - by combatting age-based stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination, we can improve economic developmentt, harness intergenerational knowledge, and create more equitable, healthier, and happy societies: a world for all ages.
This Decade - by creating age-friendly physical and social environments, we can enable older people to age safely in a place that is right for them, continue to develop personally, be included, and contribute to their communities while retaining their independence and health
This Decade - by providing integrated care, we can treat the person and not just theur individual diseases, so that we can better manage chronic conditions, maintain physical and mental capacity, and prevent care dependency.
This Decade - by ensuring people get access to long-term care when they need it, we can make sure that we all have the care and support required to live with dignity and rights.
By acting together across these four areas, we can add quality to quantity and give all people the cance to lead a meaningul life, no matter their age. Together, we can make every year count - not by numbers, but by how we live and grow in between.
